What Are Tooth-Colored Fillings?

A dental filling is used to restore a tooth that has been weakened by decay or trauma. At Larry Young Dental, we use a composite resin to create discreet, tooth-colored fillings. The resin is comprised of a mix of acrylic plastics blended with tiny glass particles. It is non-toxic, bonds easily to the tooth, and can be color-matched to blend in seamlessly with your natural smile! This modern dental filling material can also be used to repair cracked or broken teeth.

How Do Tooth-Colored Fillings Work?

The process for placing a filling is fairly simple and can typically be completed in less than an hour. Depending on how deep your cavity is, Dr. Young may first numb the tooth with anesthetic. Next, he will remove the damaged or decayed portions of the tooth. A primer may be applied to help the composite resin chemically bond to your tooth. Dr. Young will place the composite resin into the space left by decay then harden it using a special curing light. Lastly, we will smooth and polish your new filling and check your bite before sending you on your way.

Benefits of Tooth-Colored Fillings

Of course, the biggest advantage of tooth-colored fillings over metal amalgam fillings is their discreet appearance. Most people will never even notice that you have a dental filling!

Additional benefits of tooth-colored fillings include:

  • Bond directly to the tooth instead of relying on slots, grooves or pins placed in healthy tooth structure.
  • Less prone to cause dental sensitivity than metal fillings.
  • 100% mercury-free, unlike metal fillings.
  • Quick, comfortable procedure.
  • Restore up to 95% of the original strength of the tooth.
  • Dental insurance typically covers a large portion of the cost of fillings.

Not sure if you need this type of restoration? Some indications that you could benefit from a tooth-colored filling include:

  • You have a visible hole in one of your teeth
  • You notice a particular tooth often feels sensitive
  • You notice that food always gets stuck in the same spot on a tooth
  • You have an old metal filling but want to replace it with a subtler alternative
  • An old filling fell out
  • A tooth feels rough when you run your tongue over it

If any of the above points ring true to you, do not wait to contact our office. Delaying treatment will only allow a damaged or decayed tooth to worsen. Acting now by getting a tooth-colored filling in Jacksonville can help you avoid needing more extensive dental work in the future.
