A fixed bridge is used to fill spaces caused by missing teeth. The missing teeth are replaced with bridge teeth (pontics) and are attached to the surrounding teeth with crowns supporting the bridge. The style and design of your fixed bridge will depend on the health and strength of the teeth supporting the bridge tooth. Additional factors are size and location of the space in relation to the rest of your teeth. If the health of the supporting teeth is in question, surgically implanted metal posts (dental implants) may offer an alternative. For a bridge that replaces many teeth, we may recommend an implant supported bridge or a removable partial denture. With proper care, a fixed bridge can last many years.
